The same loose and compacted bulk density procedure is applied to coarse aggregate, using a larger measuring cylinder sized to the aggregate's nominal maximum size.
Higher compacted bulk density generally indicates better particle packing and a well-graded material, which translates into a more economical concrete mix for a given strength requirement.
