Tensile Strength Test on Reinforcement Bars

IS 1608

A bar sample of measured gauge length and diameter is gripped in a universal testing machine and pulled in tension at a controlled rate until it fractures. The maximum load reached, divided by the bar's original cross-sectional area, gives the Ultimate Tensile Strength (UTS).

UTS is checked against the minimum required by IS 1786 for the bar's stated grade, and the UTS/yield-strength ratio is also checked where a ductility class (D-grade) is specified.
